THE BEACH
The island of Martha's Vineyard is a special place. But even special places have their own special places, and Quansoo beach is one of them. At Quansoo, you are so far from the clutter and din of downisland, and from the nearest house or car, that it seems that the distance should be measured not in miles but in centuries.
Surfside. Pondside. A pristine strand of dunes and sand runs for over a mile, separating Tisbury Great Pond from the Ocean. Your children can learn to swim in the warm and protected waters of the pond. You can enjoy the surf of the Atlantic. Or ride the currents of the "Opening", a kind of tide-driven river, back and forth between the two. There are no rocks: Quansoo is a barrier beach built and refreshed with sand washed from the Ocean. Always changing, always new. Just the way it was when people first came to the island. Tisbury Great Pond is the river mouth of the ice age river that drained the glaciers from the island. A Quansoo childhood is the foundation for beautiful dreams. One day an artist. Another day an explorer. Then next a scientist.
